Good mower and great at additional tasks. Decent power and optimal performance. Lasts at least a couple of years.

Needs regular maintenance and Yard Machines don’t exactly use a specific engine type so complications can vary from unit to unit. Poor customer support.

The Yard Machines 13AC762F000 might not have everything figured out to make it an ultra-reliable machine but it does offer a decent package at a fairly alright price. It has a 12.5 HP Briggs & Stratton engine rated at 344cc with 7 speed transmission and a two year warranty. Plus, large rear wheels with relatively smaller front ones help tighten the turning radius and keep it pointed in the direction you want to go. Seating is comfortable as well as adjustable while the mowing deck and attachments are all adjustable with the ability to multitask this red beauty for more than just mowing.

Our Review:

Ok so, the Yard Machines 13AC762F000 isn’t the world’s most loved riding mower. In fact, my experience tells me the same thing. But what it also tells me is that this is a mower that can be highly customized. Even the manufacturers tend to interchange engines, at times using a Kohler unit and then a Briggs & Stratton engine. I wonder if they do the same for rest of the components, especially tiny parts that really matter a lot. Well, thankfully the unit I got was a Briggs & Stratton, which their customer care was kind enough to let me know is their standard engine on this particular model for the past year.

Coming to the performance, the 13AC762F000 was awesome in the first couple of months. I possibly could not have used it rigorously enough in this time to test out its durability so I used to let my neighbor use it on the weekends. Well, as it turns out if you overuse this little tractor, it tends to demand a lot of care and attention. First, the oil changes are a little too regular for my liking and then there is the problem of clogged carburetor or spark plug complication every now and then. The parking brake lock too slowly starts losing its teeth. After two months, it refused to stay in place and the culprit as I detected as a faulty plastic latch. Why do companies make the most important components from plastic?

Anyways, a call to Yard Machines and I got shipped a replacement – 2 weeks later but at least free and they were kind enough to send over two extras. I figured if their warranty lasted 2 years then the least they could do is give me a few spares to keep around in case it happens tomorrow. Basically what I am saying is that if you have a bit of mechanic’s instinct in you and happen to understand engines a little then you can actually make the Yard Machines 13AC762F000 work to your advantage. Just don’t expect the world from this mini-tractor.

[/note] Conclusion:

Yard Machines are trying to turn a new leaf by introducing Briggs & Stratton engines into their mower tractor range. This is a good start but they still have a long distance to go before their creation can challenge the dominance of Husqvarna. So is it a total waste? No actually if you enjoy having a mower that you can tinker with and fix easily with whatever is available in your town then this is the mower to have. It uses parts that can be fixed, repaired or at the end replaced. The two years warranty also ensures that your monkey business doesn’t turn it into a complete lemon.

My Dad has had a Yard Machine and has had it for about 7 years. It still runs well and has not had an excess of maintenance issues, save a leaking fuel hose that needed replacement (rubber doesn’t last forever). It always starts up and keeps running.
It is possible that his tractor is on the far end of the “curve” as far as reliability, but I have to say I would probably buy one again, unless my yard size and use was great enough to go for a more expensive one.
As for the engines being either Briggs or Kohler, both brand names are rated pretty well. It’s not like they put wholly Chinese made engines on these.
