[note color=”#E9E9E9″] Pros:
Great Briggs & Stratton engine design, very comfortable ride, easy first time use, little assembly required and dependable design with good fuel efficiency.

The deck may need alignment at times and it is a relatively new product on the market

Have a large yard over 1 acre in size but don’t want to invest into overtly expensive ZTRs or Ride-on mowers? The Poulan Pro PB17542LT isn’t the largest or the best ride-on mower in the market but it is a relatively less expensive and yet highly dependable model with 42 inch deck, 20 inch rear wheels and a 17.5 HP Briggs & Stratton engine. It features 6 speed transmission, 1.5 gallon fuel tank, manual clutch mechanism, a decent 18 inch turning radius and the option to side discharge. In short, this is a professional grade ride-on mower with the price tag of an entry level product in this range. Small, zippy and good fuel efficiency are its forte.

Our Review:

My reason to try the Poulan Pro PB17542LT is to ascertain whether this new entrant has got what it takes to make it large in the market. As of now, this particular model is brand new and not many folks have given it a good bashing. Naturally, a lot is expected out of the Poulan, considering previous models that have done well from the company. My first concern though before receiving this mini-tractor mower was whether it would actually be powerful enough to move over my yard’s unique layout. Not only is third of the area covered with trees but the terrain is undulating with a few steep surfaces. Honestly I was not expecting the 17.5 HP Briggs & Stratton engine to provide enough power to move over the steep slopes. But to my surprise once I had the unit assembled and the deck aligned properly, I found the mower sweeping across my yard with ease even over steep rises.

When you get this mower, be sure to follow the instructions and check the tire pressure, alignment of the cutting deck and change the oil. There isn’t much assembly required since it comes almost fully assembled from the manufacturers. Once this is done, starting the engine is real easy. Turn the key and fire it up. I really can’t comment right now on how long this tractor/mower will last, especially if I try to use it for purposes other than mowing, but the one month it has been sweeping through my yard, I have to say I am thoroughly impressed.

One other thing to note, at over $1000 you may feel that this is a tad bit expensive but consider the fact that it can double as a tractor when required, has a decent turning radius and is quite easy to control with a decent fuel economy. At the end of the day you don’t want to be treating your ride-on mower for problems and repairs every time you ride it out. In my opinion, both the Poulan brand name and Briggs & Stratton engine it uses are trustworthy as evident from past experience. I think you will agree with me if I say Poulan does have outstanding customer support and this is probably one reason why you should trust them with a brand new product. No use purchasing an old product in the market that has poor customer support, when any compromised part can set you back a good hundred bucks.

[/note] Conclusion:

Using the Poulan Pro PB17542LT, I was reminded of the first time I experienced the liberated feeling of riding the Husqvarna YTH2042. In fact, both have the same cutting deck size, similar turning radius and are blessed with Briggs & Stratton engines. But the PB17542LT costs around $500 cheaper with a slightly compromised power output and a few ergonomic features missing. As such you don’t miss out on anything really important and yet get a smaller and more responsive lawn mower. Poulan might just have produced a winner here.
