Cordless and nimble, the Black & Decker SPCM1936 delivers sufficient power from its 36 volt rechargeable batteries to power on through 1/3rd acre home sites without the associated mess and cost of gas. A single lever design integrated into the handle lets users quickly change the mowing height of all four wheels simultaneously to suit the terrain. The super silent battery operated design of this lawn mower lets users decide when they want to trim their lawns without having to worry about the environment or neighbors. It is actually intelligent enough to automatically decide the best speed and cutting variables in tandem with your mowing pace thanks to a self-propelled variable speed motor. The lightweight polymer deck with an advanced cutting blade design give it all the credibility necessary to last a really long time. Moreover, with the click of a button you can decide to either mulch, bag or go for a rear discharge. The Black & Decker SPCM1936 mower is backed by a 2 year limited period warranty.

Our Review:

Who does not hate mowing the front lawn soon after a torrential rainfall? Well, when we did receive the Black & Decker SPCM1936, it had just rained the previous night and covered our front lawn with plenty of soggy patches. Thankfully, the lawn mower comes almost fully assembled, although it does not ship with a mulch and bag accessory – these you have to purchase separately. I found that the unit is well designed and lightweight but never feels flimsy. The next morning, having fully charged the batteries, I took it for a test spin around the lawn and found it rather easy to maneuver. In fact, a tiny push is all it takes to move it along. Zero noise, hardly any effort required and instant height reduction ability converted me into a Black & Decker SPCM1936 fan right then and there. I can’t find anything wrong with the way its designed or the way it works. There’s a good reason why it has great reviews on Yes, the buttons and levers are kind of hard to locate but that is alright considering it is not all that powerful or dangerous like gas powered mowers. On the bright side, kids won’t be able to operate this lawn mower thanks to its removable batteries that you can store separately when not in use.

A word of caution though, if you plan on running this mower over soggy patches, then do reduce its height to the lowest setting and slowly push it around as it tends to slide a little leaving out small patches of uncut grass.

This mower has the best reviews. I can’t find a store that has it in stock in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Home Depot has an online sale but it is out of stock online. Any recommendations?

Hey Linda, has it in stock currently for around $440 with free shipping. (see links in the review). Amazon does price matching, so if you find a better price online, let them know and they will match it.

I own this mower and am having problems. It leaves patches of uncut grass no matter how much I overlap my rows. The grass is neither wet or extra long since I mow often. Am I doing something wrong?

Nice review–I just got my mower and tried to do the height adjustment–pulled the two orange levers together to dis-engage the height, but at that point, couldn’t figure out how to raise or lower it–had my engineering student son look at it and after 10 minutes of trying, couldn’t make it work either–is the raising and lowering fairly intuitive? The instructions really don’t say anything more than pulling the two levers together… on amazon how some people say the charge doesn’t work well on this mower and now I am having my doubts and may just take it back for a gas mower — one other thing–I did note when I finally was able to get my back ordered mower, the interior box had been stapled and it was clear that new tape was put on the top…..

Does one have to keep the batteries on constant charge over the winter months?

How long will the batteries last on average? How many re-charge cycles?

Power aside, can you disable the drive feature?, as I prefer to walk/push the mower myself, and it will sue less power if it’s only required to cut the grass!

This weekend I will be buying a gas powered mower after owning th B&D SPCK1936 for a little over a year. The main problem is that the self propel feature keeps breaking. Self propel is critical for us since we have a pretty hilly lawn to cut. Getting the mower serviced was a lot of trouble because the closest authorized service center was over 50 miles aways. They weren’t open evenings or weekends so I had to take time off work to take it in and drop it off. After 3.5 weeks the mower was fixed and it was actually covered under the 2 year limited warranty so it didn’t cost us anything other than the inconvenience of getting it there and back. After that the mower worked great the first time I mowed the lawn, but just as I was starting to mow the second time the self propel stopped working again! That was it! Over $900 (the mower + 2 additional batteries) into this experiment and it’s time to cut our losses.

If you have a small flat lawn this mower would be great. I loved it when it worked but it’s way too under powered for a medium to large property, especially if it’s hilly.
